Community get-together at Coin Street
Coin Street Community Builders’ community get-together on 20 December was absolutely buzzing with over 200 children, parents and carers taking part in games, Christmas wreath making, face painting, chatting, enjoying refreshments. Father Christmas paid a visit and there was even a singalong: a re-working of Jingle Bells (Jingle bells, jingle bells, Coin Street all the way, oh what fun it is to learn, with my child every day) and a performance by the Coin Street Choir.
Parents and carers took the opportunity to encourage other families to participate in the Lambeth consultation and kick off the Keep Coin Street Open for Lambeth Families campaign. Parents, carers, children and babies donned the t-shirt in support.
Lambeth Council is currently consulting on proposals on the future of its children’s centres. To make budget cuts, the council is proposing that all funding is withdrawn from Coin Street family and children’s centre from September. This is part of a wider plan to reduce the number of Lambeth children’s centres. These proposals mean families across Waterloo and Lambeth North will have to travel to Kennington or Oval to access Lambeth children’s centre support.
As part of the consultation process, Lambeth Council has committed to visit our family and children’s centre. A date has now been confirmed for later this month. Parents are planning further activity.
Message from a parent (photo attached): Hi I’m Elizabeth, a local parent. The family support at Coin Street has made a huge different to me and my family. Join me and others to help persuade Lambeth Council to revisit these proposals and Keep Coin Street Open for Lambeth Families.
