A festival of opportunities for Lambeth’s young people this half-term

The housing charity’s youth services team are calling for anyone aged between 11 and 25 years-old to register for the week-long festival which includes a range of opportunities to experience potential careers. They’ll have the chance to develop new skills, establish relationships with employers and see what it’s like to work in jobs they may never have considered. Opportunities this year include a visit and workshops at Sky media studios, games design careers at Goldsmiths, and much more.

The first-ever Festival of Opportunities was held in February half-term in 2017, after Peabody’s Youth Board (made up of young Peabody residents aged 14-25) found that many of their peers felt they had a lack of opportunities and guidance.

Lajaune Lincoln, Head of Peabody Youth Services said: “We are passionate about supporting young people to access high-level opportunities to enable them to progress. Youth unemployment in this country is a significant problem, and social mobility even more so, so we are addressing a need. We want to help raise people’s aspirations and establish positive relationships between young people, employers and educators. Whether it is in Tech, Science, Finance, Sport or Media industries – there are a wealth of opportunities on offer and we hope lots of young Londoners sign up. It’ll help broaden horizons, develop skills and foster friendships this half-term.”

You don’t have to be a Peabody resident to register, but for some activities it will be necessary to submit an up-to-date CV.  Sign-up here: bit.ly/FoO2018

Last year, 150 young people took part in the programmes and events. Two of the most well-attended were Women in Tech, where 18 young women were given a behind-the-scenes tour of Google’s HQ in King’s Cross – and Industry Insight – Trading Floor, where several young people had the chance to experience life as a stock broker and learn about the futures market at Divento Financials Ltd.

Nariyah, (23, from Wandsworth) who landed a job in the Finance department of leading law firm Clifford Chance after attending an industry insight day in law, said: “It was a one-off opportunity to get real insight into a law firm and get a chance to look around. When you get this kind of chance to find out about different careers, you should grab it with both hands!”

This year’s Festival of Opportunities takes place between 12-16 February. Email youngpeople@peabody.org.uk to find out more.
