Hi Jean – feminine products scheme goes live at Black Prince Hub

Working in close partnership with Lambeth Council,Black Prince Trust set up one of Lambeth’s first emergency distribution hubs providing essential food for vulnerable people. Now, they’re adding feminine hygiene products to care packages.

The ‘Hi Jean’ initiative to supply free feminine hygiene product to the community opened on Friday 24  April at the Black Prince Hub. The partners behind it plan to keep this service going throughout the Covid-19 crisis.

Care packages

Black Prince Trust’s (BPT) distribution hub has been working with Lambeth Council, supplying care packages to vulnerable and low-income families in North Lambeth for two and a half weeks in response to Covid-19.

Introducing ’Hi Jean’

Feminine Hygiene Products (FHPs) are usually available free to young women at schools, community centres and youth clubs. The pandemic stopped these usual outlets. So BPT, Brixton Peoples Kitchen (BPK) and Street Soccer London (SSL) have teamed up to offer a new initiative ’Hi Jean’, for local people to access free sanitary towels, tampons etc via the Community Hub.

Funding and the future

Street Soccer London, already a BPT community partner, joined the initiative as a co-funder and partner. Black Prince Trust has lost c.85% of its monthly income, but onsite partners’ payments allowed us to help fund this initiative so far. We will need help from the community via donations. If Hi Jean is successful, and funding permitting, we hope to expand this into other key community areas across Lambeth and potentially neighbouring boroughs over the summer.

Community support

People from the community are supporting the initiative by dropping off sanitary towels and tampons – a massively helpful addition to the stock. People leave online comments with their donations, like: “A great project supporting an under-appreciated need” and “Thank you for your great work”.
